Ready to Roll

Our History

Ohio, United States
Having recently retired we are fulfilling our long time dream. We began our camping life with a tent in 1969 adjusting as each of our three sons arrived over the years and gradually progressed to a 32' Class A in 2007. Even after our sons became too busy with their own interests, we continued dreaming over the years. The Louisville, KY 2003 Great North American RV Rally and the book "Movin' On" convinced us that a motorhome after retirement was really for us! In 2007 we sold our home and disposed of most of our belongings and awaited the wife's retirement on February 1, 2008. We were out in our first motorhome ten times in our first summer in 2007, with our grandson joining us eight of those ten times. Since he must stay behind with his mom and dad to continue school, we told him he can join us on vacations (by car or plane) anywhere we are as we travel the US. Imagine the history lessons he could acquire! However, Mom and Dad don't look at it that way, especially the flying. Fortunately we don't miss work one bit!! We just miss the friends there. We have many hobbies to keep us busy when we decide to sit still for a day. Hope to see you on the road.

HURRICANE AND ST. GEORGE, UTAH

After our big day going to Bryce Canyon on Monday, we spent two days here at home and doing laundry and a few things about Hurricane.  Our RV Resort is just a half block off of one of the main streets in Hurricane (pronounced Hurricun by the locals).
It was great for me to get a lot of miscellaneous record keeping done.  We had received a letter regarding our Medicare Part D with our recorded address of Florida, so I had to do a lot of research before responding to them.  After that job was completed, on Tuesday April 21st  we decided to go back to the Senior Center for lunch.  They have a great menu each week and serve on Monday through Thursday. This week we made friends with five very nice pleasant local people, Shirl, Bonnie, Eleanor, Thelma and Rollin.  When leaving after lunch they all asked us to join them again!! We were pleased and will be glad to do so, they were very interesting.

When Rollin mentioned that his son was Bishop at church, I realized that they are members of the LDS church.  So we got into a discussion of genealogy research.  Rollin was wondering what spurred Gary into doing this research.  I wonder if he was of the opinion that the Mormons are the only ones who are interested in their ancestry.  Though we may have very different reasons for doing the research, it is most interesting to many people.  I told him that one of my dearest friends from back in Salem is a member of LDS also.
The Senior Center is very nice so I took some more pictures.  I thought it a quite large room with a nice serving area and a very nice lobby.

After lunch we went through their Thrift Shop again and Gary found a pair of cargo shorts.  Their shop is small, but the goods change often.  The ladies working it were very nice to converse with as well.

After leaving there we went to two more Thrift/Antique stores across the street.  Amazing the amount of antiques, especially. But was fun going through it and Gary did find a couple books of his favorite author.  We also made a trip to Walmart to pick up a script.  So it was a full day after all.

Wednesday was another day of record keeping and bill paying.  Then Gary did some on his new colored pencil drawing, until he ran out of white pencil.  We'll have to go into St. George to find that. and I spent some time sitting outside reading, until the wind got the best of me.  We sure can tell there is weather changes in the area, though it is not wet for us.  I think that the higher altitudes get it.

Thursday began with a trip to the local grocery store because we were out of water, but managed to buy more! After bringing the groceries home, we went to the local Hurricane Historic Museum.

It was interesting and mostly about the first eleven Mormon families to settle in the area.  Other than that, it was the usual antiques. We drove on in to St. George and stopped at the Honda dealer to get a burned out brake light replaced and then on to Michael's for Gary's pencils.  We enjoyed some more thrift shops and then finished up the day with lunch in the area that we visited the other day.  I put the picture of the outside of that store in a couple Blogs back, called Thomas Judd's Store Co.  Today I took pictures inside and got some history on it.  It was the first business in St. George and is 104 years old and has been a candy store for the last 30 years.  They served a few nice lunch selections as well as selling ice cream old style bottles of pop and candy.  Here again the antiques are of great interest.  We will definitely stop back there!!

Yes, broccoli, cheese soup, filled with a lot of broccoli and a toasted cheese sandwich (loaded with cheese!  It was a very busy place and we could sure see why.
Across the street was a nice park, and very busy!!

Time to call it a day!! So we headed back to Hurricane. but not before I got a picture of this interesting business.  No it is not a house, but it looks to have been built with local stone.

Check back and see what comes up next.  Have a great week.
