Our History

Ohio, United States
Having recently retired we are fulfilling our long time dream. We began our camping life with a tent in 1969 adjusting as each of our three sons arrived over the years and gradually progressed to a 32' Class A in 2007. Even after our sons became too busy with their own interests, we continued dreaming over the years. The Louisville, KY 2003 Great North American RV Rally and the book "Movin' On" convinced us that a motorhome after retirement was really for us! In 2007 we sold our home and disposed of most of our belongings and awaited the wife's retirement on February 1, 2008. We were out in our first motorhome ten times in our first summer in 2007, with our grandson joining us eight of those ten times. Since he must stay behind with his mom and dad to continue school, we told him he can join us on vacations (by car or plane) anywhere we are as we travel the US. Imagine the history lessons he could acquire! However, Mom and Dad don't look at it that way, especially the flying. Fortunately we don't miss work one bit!! We just miss the friends there. We have many hobbies to keep us busy when we decide to sit still for a day. Hope to see you on the road.

DAY ONE in PAHRUMP, NEVADA

Arriving in Pahrump (pah meaning water and rump meaning rock), April 2nd, we spent the afternoon setting up house in the wind.  There was a cooler spell coming through with a lot of wind for a few days.  We were glad that we were off the road with the motorhome!

Friday, 4-3-15, we began our sight seeing and checking out the area.  We always have to find the local Walmart and a suitable church.  Breakfast at Mom's Diner was first on the agenda.  It was a nice little place, good food and busy.  It was enough food to hold us for the day until dinner, but that could be because Audrey usually causes a late start. Ha-ha

Does not look busy here,
but it had been!

From Mom's Diner we stopped in at Fran's Classic Consignment Shop in the same plaza.  Very interesting, and would love to have many things from there, but not suitable for a motorhome. Darn! From there we went on to Pahrump Valley Historical Museum. The lady in the museum gave a short history of the town beginning with the meaning of the word Pahrump (water/rock, with the knowledge that the location has a natural aquifer under it.  The population from early mining and farming days was about 500, but it now has a registered 38,543. The altitude ranges from 2,550 to 2,750 feet and is considered a high desert terrain.
The museum was interesting partly because of the historic memorabilia from the cowboy and pioneer family lifestyles and a donated private collection of Abraham Lincoln memorabilia (considered to be one of the finest in the country) that filled a second room, but then more so because of the local mining equipment diagrams and videos, as well as videos about the historic nuclear testing done in the area.

Could this be Bill W?
Thought of you!!

Area also known for it's wineries.
We may check one out, but a Date Farm
and date shake are next on the schedule!

slow growing conditions which might be an example of drought.

From the Museum we were on to the Gold Nugget Casino for rest and fun, with a gain more than doubling our money.  Not bad as this does not often happen, especially for me. It's a good thing that we go light!!  But I do think that this is one of the main industries for the area??  Besides mining, that is.  Nye County is said to be the third largest county in the United States, but the poorest!!  Most of the population increase here is the Snowbirds who want to settle in more moderate temperatures year around, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. There is a lot of street layouts for housing developments going on.  I was surprised to see three post office branches when we went to make sure that we could have mail forwarded to general delivery.  But there does not seem to be many schools or we have not seen them..

Our RV Resort is right across the street from the hotel.
Tomorrow is to be a trip to Death Valley's China Date Farm.  Not a hot time of year, but some neat scenery.  The average daytime temperatures here in Pahrump are, high 58 in Dec and Jan to 101 in July, and night averages are 29 low to 69 high.  Not bad!!
This wind that we are experiencing this weekend is from a front going through.  We noticed that there have been tornadoes in Oklahoma.  Hope that we move through that territory after they are all done!!

Take care and God Bless on this day of celebration that He has Risen!!
