Our History

My photo
Ohio, United States
Having recently retired we are fulfilling our long time dream. We began our camping life with a tent in 1969 adjusting as each of our three sons arrived over the years and gradually progressed to a 32' Class A in 2007. Even after our sons became too busy with their own interests, we continued dreaming over the years. The Louisville, KY 2003 Great North American RV Rally and the book "Movin' On" convinced us that a motorhome after retirement was really for us! In 2007 we sold our home and disposed of most of our belongings and awaited the wife's retirement on February 1, 2008. We were out in our first motorhome ten times in our first summer in 2007, with our grandson joining us eight of those ten times. Since he must stay behind with his mom and dad to continue school, we told him he can join us on vacations (by car or plane) anywhere we are as we travel the US. Imagine the history lessons he could acquire! However, Mom and Dad don't look at it that way, especially the flying. Fortunately we don't miss work one bit!! We just miss the friends there. We have many hobbies to keep us busy when we decide to sit still for a day. Hope to see you on the road.

MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR from ARIZONA !!

Christmas morning began early for us when we got up at 6:30 am (which was 8:30 for them) to be ready to get on Skype with a Web video cam when our sons got together for the opening of gifts at our married son's home. It made us feel like we were right here (almost)!! We spent almost two hours watching and visiting with them. It was hard to imagine the big drum set that they got our grandson as it sure took up a lot of space in their little living room. But he sure was happy with it!! He was also happy with the games that he got as well as the gift card to download music to his Ipod, in spite of the fact that the card was wrapped in with underwear by his Grandma!! I always like to surprise him!! After our shared morning and preparing a covered dish, we went to our big Hall here at the Resort for Christmas Dinner with fellow Workampers. There were nearly ninety in attendance. (People who did not go home for the holidays, or have family come to visit them.) Since this is such a large Resort, it is nice to have the network of friends that came about because of the common bond of "workamping". Our director furnished the ham for our dinner and the rest of us filled the rest of the tables of food. There definitely was not any shortage of food!! We were supplied right down to the little mice on the dessert table. They were so cute made of cherries dipped in chocolate, with a white chocolate kiss and two ears of almond slices!! There was magic and slight of hand for entertainment while we were eating and socializing. But then the real fun began when the dinner organizers put on a skit to the tune of "Santa Baby". Ron and Ann are such a nice couple who work hard to keep us all at home here, getting acquainted with each other!! They keep very busy organizing many of the activities. The after dinner fun continued with the drawing from the white elephant gifts brought by each one of us. The gifts were then swapped as Glo read a funny story in which the words left and right were used liberally. We were passing the gifts as she read, switching direction for the gifts when each directional work was read. After unwrapping your gift, every one had an opportunity when called to either keep their gift or trade once with anyone. Much fun and many laughs were shared during this swapping process!! I had my eye on the Mexican sombrero, but I did not get it as my gift had been broken in the process of swapping and I did not want to pass on a broken gift!! I figured better luck next time. But Ron our party organizer made sure that mine got traded for his box of candy. I said that they are so sweet, didn't I?? At the end of the party the organizers surprised their visiting daughter for her birthday. Another near Christmas birthday, eh Vic?? And she was surprised!! We spent an evening after Christmas driving around the resort checking out the Christmas decorations. They did judge the streets for the "best decorated". Out of twenty-two streets there were three "best" and two "honorable mention", but ours was not one of them. Quite a few on our street did not arrive from places north until after the holidays. With the bad weather in the north, I am surprised they did not pull up roots earlier!! There are so-o-o many from Canada!! Enjoy the lights!
Of course, you can see that these are Park Models. Who else would have storage space for all of this "stuff"?? Even our little tree fits with all of our other decorations in one under-the-bed box that we squeeze into our basement compartment! We did add a set of three spiral trees this year for outside. We did not want to play Scrooge!!
We finished up a wonderful year going to Apache Junction (about ten miles away) to spend New Years Eve with Ohio friends Bill and Bette in their new Park Model winter home. We had not visited with them since we arrived in AZ. So it was great catching up while we played Pegs and Jokers and munched all evening. We haven't stayed out till 2 am in years. Yes, that was 4 am Ohio time!! Thanks Bill and Bette, we had a wonderful time!! We must get together again soon.
The Sunday after New Years Gary invited a couple at church from Washington state to go out for dinner. We had a wonderful visit, but did not even get time to talk about all that they have seen in their travels. So we will have to do it again and we can get better acquainted and share more!! So glad that you could go, Don and Louise!
Happy New Year to all of our friends and family!!

TONTO NATIONAL FOREST - AZ

It seems all streets in Mesa appear to end at the mountains, whether going north, south, east or west!! It is beautiful.
On our way out of Mesa to the APACHE HISTORIC TRAIL, I found this contrast of modern hotel and casino and the desert around it and mountains beyond very beautiful also! Some day we might stop in at the casino for fun, but our interest for this day was The Tonto National Forest, Tortilla Flats, and Theodore Roosevelt Lake east of Mesa AZ.
As you can see from the road signs
and the continued curves around the mountains, looking very rustic, that we did much winding and switching back and forth that day!
Here Gary seems to be taking a closer look to find the way! But, no, we are not lost. We are just looking closer at the sights!
At one of our stops we ran into another much younger couple who were much in awe of the sights also. They offered to take our picture and we also took theirs in return.
At the stop where our picture was taken, we were looking down into this valley where the electrical high tension wires ran.
When you enlarge this picture, you can see them. It give you some idea of our height.
We again continue to drive on. Oh-h-h, but where will we end up??
We stopped again to watch the young people climbing down the mountain sides. What is the interest??
The cars and pieces of cars that are rusting away in the valley!! We imagined that some did not make those curves as well as we did!!
We could have stopped at the local saloon at Tortilla Flats for a drink or lunch, but decided to keep on going. After all, we still had a way to go to get to Theodore Roosevelt Lake!
However, we are soon to find out that this low land was indicating that we are in
washout area!! After seeing the floods in Northwest Arizona this week where houses broke up and floated down the rivers, we could imagine what the torrents in this valley could be!!
We soon came upon a road closed sign indicating that we would never reach TR Lake this day! So we pulled into a parking area near the signs and walked around taking in all of the views from this mountain side.
We watched as some (younger) folks decided not to heed the road closed sign, but changed their mode of transportation to "feet", and continued on down the mountain where cars were not permitted. We did not stay around to hear what they experienced, but left going back the way we had come and stopped next at Canyon Lake.
BEAUTIFUL !!
We even saw an RV campground near the lake and also stopped at a lakeside restaurant for lunch. Looking out the restaurant window over the deck, we watched the paddle boat leave with a tour group.
Our next stop was at the Goldfield Mining Ghost town.
Much of it made you think that you were living back a century!!
All very interesting. Gary looked over the old mining equipment sitting around. Most of it was still in pretty good condition. However, we did not take the walking tour down into the mine.
We thought that since we did not reach our ultimate destination, we might try to reach it from another direction and road later. Our oldest son might be coming to stay for a week of vacation soon. Maybe we will keep that trip for something to do with him.
Check back with us. And a Very Merry Christmas to all !!
