Our History

My photo
Ohio, United States
Having recently retired we are fulfilling our long time dream. We began our camping life with a tent in 1969 adjusting as each of our three sons arrived over the years and gradually progressed to a 32' Class A in 2007. Even after our sons became too busy with their own interests, we continued dreaming over the years. The Louisville, KY 2003 Great North American RV Rally and the book "Movin' On" convinced us that a motorhome after retirement was really for us! In 2007 we sold our home and disposed of most of our belongings and awaited the wife's retirement on February 1, 2008. We were out in our first motorhome ten times in our first summer in 2007, with our grandson joining us eight of those ten times. Since he must stay behind with his mom and dad to continue school, we told him he can join us on vacations (by car or plane) anywhere we are as we travel the US. Imagine the history lessons he could acquire! However, Mom and Dad don't look at it that way, especially the flying. Fortunately we don't miss work one bit!! We just miss the friends there. We have many hobbies to keep us busy when we decide to sit still for a day. Hope to see you on the road.

SEATTLE WASHINGTON - DAY TWO

SEATTLE, home of the 1962 WORLD'S FAIR SPACE NEEDLE. We began the day with a walk to the Space Needle for a trip to the top to see it's great views of the city. Puget Sound and Bainbridge Island Union Lake From there we got the Hop-on Hop-off Double Decker Bus to tour the city. We had a good guide and managed to get her bus each time that we hopped back on. We passed the long lines waiting to get in to the Annual Hemp Festival. I think that it would be a good thing if our day ends before dark. I would imagine that the street scene would change a lot after dark! One of our Hop-off spots was the Pike Market Place on the Wharf. It is multiple buildings and multiple floors! We did not even begin to cover all of it. This is the waterfront view.
It is famous for the fish flying as the young fellows threw the purchase items to the fellows at the scales for weighing and wrapping. There were so many standing around and those taking pictures, that Gary could not get a clear picture of one flying through the air. So he got the next best thing. Another store near by.
Then one of our guides hopped off to show us the ding-a-ling under the kilt on the mannequin at the shop Utillikilts. Believe me we saw all kinds of dress on the streets, but we did not see anyone wearing a utillikilt. But I am guessing that the price would have been high for the street people and most tourists! Next stop off for us was lunch at Hard Rock Cafe'. It was a quiet time there. I imagine that they rock in the evening!
Back on the bus, we are looking at more architecture.
The guide pointed out the attractive stone work and that it is much too high on the building to be a good view for the pedestrians. How true!
The top floor of this building was a condo purchased by Bill Gates for his father. It is handy that it is across the street from the Art Guild where his wife volunteers much of her time. Many of the buildings pointed out to us had much history in the coffee industry, and not just Starbuck's Coffee!
There are still buildings in Seattle that were built for the 1962 World's Fair, as well as the Monorail.
Next we decided to get off and take the Ferry over to Bainbridge Island.
This view of the main land was a beauty!!
Our objective for the Ferry ride was to be out on the water of Puget Sound. We did not have too much time left before the last round of the bus going to the Space Needle closer to our motel.
As we got closer to the Island we knew that we had to get off the Ferry for security purposes . Note the two ramps for the ferry, one for pedestrians and one for vehicles.
So we only had time for a little jaunt to McKenna Ryan's Quilt Shop and then back on the ferry for our return to Seattle.
We had a nice visit there and Gary learned about the stitch witchery for using on his wood veneer that he is using on the plaque for the Boy Scouts Eagle name plates.
On our walk back to the ferry we were looking for a place to get an ice cream cone on the way.
We found this interesting wall mirror made from game boards. But we did not find any ice cream!!
End of the bus ride and almost end of the day, but must find someplace to get dinner. Not sure what we would find on our walk back to the motel, but were lucky to find the 5 Point Cafe'. We felt certain that with plenty of people eating out on the side walk, it must have earned a good name. And we were not disappointed!! It was yum and the portions were more than adequate!!
From the sidewalk, we had this view of the Needle!
Feet, ready or not, it is time to finish the walk for the day!!
The next morning we left early because of the cloud cover, to return to Mt. Hood Village Resort. We copped out on the Duck (amphibian) ride around Seattle and out on Union Lake, to avoid getting wet and wind blown. Afterward, we regretted our wimpy decision.
We also passed by Mt. St. Helens as there was too many clouds to get the clear pictures that we wanted!! Another day, another year.
