Our History

My photo
Ohio, United States
Having recently retired we are fulfilling our long time dream. We began our camping life with a tent in 1969 adjusting as each of our three sons arrived over the years and gradually progressed to a 32' Class A in 2007. Even after our sons became too busy with their own interests, we continued dreaming over the years. The Louisville, KY 2003 Great North American RV Rally and the book "Movin' On" convinced us that a motorhome after retirement was really for us! In 2007 we sold our home and disposed of most of our belongings and awaited the wife's retirement on February 1, 2008. We were out in our first motorhome ten times in our first summer in 2007, with our grandson joining us eight of those ten times. Since he must stay behind with his mom and dad to continue school, we told him he can join us on vacations (by car or plane) anywhere we are as we travel the US. Imagine the history lessons he could acquire! However, Mom and Dad don't look at it that way, especially the flying. Fortunately we don't miss work one bit!! We just miss the friends there. We have many hobbies to keep us busy when we decide to sit still for a day. Hope to see you on the road.

MOVIN' ON INTO CALIFORNIA

WOW! I finally figured out what setting was different that caused poor lay out of my last couple Blogs! Thanks goodness, as I thought I was going nuts. I had not intentionally changed anything. Famous last words!!!
On Saturday, April 2, we were hooked up and ready to pull out early. Early was 7 am and that worked out real well in avoiding heavy traffic on the Interstate, to Gary's relief!
We were leaving behind 100 degree weather in Mesa AZ, not knowing what we might be getting in to as we traveled toward the mountains. But we did know that we were headed in the right direction as in Ohio they were still having new snow!!
The week prior to leaving had been a busy week in preparation for the move. I spent one morning at the laundry doing up the throw rugs and bedding. Then spent a second morning doing the regular laundry so that we would not need to do this chore again before hitting the Fresno area at least ten days out.
I also got to spend one more afternoon with my scrapbooking friends at the RV Resort where most everyone was saying "Goodbye" to everyone with their plans to return home in the north. With all of the chatter, I still got plenty of work finished. Don't know if I told you before, but I did get four albums completely finished and shipped off to Ohio for safe keeping a week before leaving.
We also went for one last afternoon with our friends, Bill and Bette, from Canal Fulton OH. We met them at Coco's Restaurant and had a wonderful lunch and of course much good conversation. They are not planning on coming back to Arizona to spend another winter, so we will have to look them up in Ohio when we get back there. The best of luck to you both and safe travels home!!
Our last evening out on the town was dinner on Monday at On The Border for Mexican food. It was good food and I sure enjoyed not cooking. Of course, we have been letting our food supply diminish so that we are not moving much, so was a good excuse to go out.
Our last event at the campground was a luncheon that our Workamper Boss, Paul Mayo, provided along with his last meeting with us. Hopefully, we will all be back next winter as it was a fun group of people to work with and we made many lasting friends.
We are hoping to make contact with a Mesa Regal neighbor of ours and one of the Workamper couples while we are in Oregon. We are always amazed at how small this country really is!! The job that we will be doing at Mt. Hood OR is a job where we are replacing a couple whom we met in Herman ME back in 2008. By keeping in contact with them, Gary had become aware of this resort's need for a replacement for them as they make other travel plans for this summer.
As we roll on down the highway, we begin to wonder if we are leaving all of the snow back in the east!! But I believe that this snow ahead of us, is just up in the mountains at higher elevations than where we will be!! At least we hope that is correct!!
As we approach the Inspection station to enter California, we are wondering what we are in for. However no problem, they just waived us on through!! We had been warned not to plan on taking fruit through with us, but we need not have worried!
About four hours after passing through the Inspection, we were nearing our destination for the week and we still see snow in the mountains. We also experienced much wind through the valley. They seem to be taking advantage of that wind for power as we saw hundreds of the wind turbines.
Leaving the Interstate on San Timoteo Canyon Rd, we were nearly to our new home location. The mountains along that road were just beautiful with many houses built along the ridge. There was also a railroad running through the valley beside our road. We were treated to the sound of trains at all time, day and night!
This is the evening view of the same mountain range with the snow caps in the distance as we saw it from our motorhome window!! Breath taking!!
These show our first views of the campground, including the three lakes which are used a lot for fishing.
I will spare you the view of the seamier side of the campground. Though quite adequate, we are sure that it is not what it once was. The best thing about it was that it was away from the traffic and bustle of the city.
While in the area we are looking up my Uncle who I have not seen in many, many years!! And we will drive up through Joshua Tree National Park, and will share that with you in the next Blog. Stay tuned.
