Our History

My photo
Ohio, United States
Having recently retired we are fulfilling our long time dream. We began our camping life with a tent in 1969 adjusting as each of our three sons arrived over the years and gradually progressed to a 32' Class A in 2007. Even after our sons became too busy with their own interests, we continued dreaming over the years. The Louisville, KY 2003 Great North American RV Rally and the book "Movin' On" convinced us that a motorhome after retirement was really for us! In 2007 we sold our home and disposed of most of our belongings and awaited the wife's retirement on February 1, 2008. We were out in our first motorhome ten times in our first summer in 2007, with our grandson joining us eight of those ten times. Since he must stay behind with his mom and dad to continue school, we told him he can join us on vacations (by car or plane) anywhere we are as we travel the US. Imagine the history lessons he could acquire! However, Mom and Dad don't look at it that way, especially the flying. Fortunately we don't miss work one bit!! We just miss the friends there. We have many hobbies to keep us busy when we decide to sit still for a day. Hope to see you on the road.

GREAT FALLS on the MISSOURI RIVER

Saturday, September 11th, we are gearing down for travel back east. But we have a few more things that we know of to see. So we started out the day to go to Fort Benton. However, since Great Falls on the Missouri River was between us and the Fort, we stopped there first. The drive north on Rt 87 was interesting on it's own before reaching our destination.
Wow, what a house!
Good thing I have zoom as it was up on the mountain.

There happened to be a look out point to stop at also! The postings gave us plenty of information of the settling of this area.  All very interesting!
It was the location of the Whoop-up Trail from fort Benton, north to Canada in 1869-1883.
Area of location of two fur Trading Posts, Ft. Cotton in 1842 and Ft. Lewis (so named for Lewis and Clark) which later was moved downriver to Ft. Benton.
It was also the Lewis and Clark Trail for their exploration west in June of 1805.
Steamboat Navigation to the head waters of the Missouri to Ft. Benton from 1860 - 1887 when the Railroad arrived.
Mullan Road, the first Federal Highway in the Northwest, ran through here for 600 miles to the head of the Columbia River at Ft. Walla-Walla.
The view was also very scenic. However, this railroad at the bottom of this ravine is no longer in use. Just a good piece of history.

On to Great Falls on the Missouri River -

Their picture of the original falls in lower portion of picture.
The dam and power house that was built later
to introduce electric to the area on the top.
Now to show it to you as we saw it today.

Next, our climb to look at it from another view.

Looking on down river with the falls to our backs, as we cross over the foot bridge.-

Let's cross over to the beautiful park area -
Day half gone so continuing the day in another Blog.  Too many pictures for one.
