I am having trouble loading pictures into the Blog!!! They want to load at the beginning only!! So giving up, I will leave these first, though I meant them to be last!!!
This was our destination for July 9th, Terry Bison Ranch Resort just south of Cheyenne. Though the campground was not the best trimmed, it is ripe with history.
Local terrain, looking out over the ranch. |
We will leave in about 45 minutes to go into Cheyenne to take a trolley tour of the city. We are getting smarter, take the tour first!!
Our drive from Utah was safe and uneventful. We left on the 8th and stayed that first night at a smaller full service Walmart. Our first location on their lot was near a old Chevy van with the hood up. After smelling the fumes for a half hour and listening to the motor revving, we moved to the other end of their lot. By morning there were at least 8 RVers and a couple 18 wheelers in the lot. Could be because they are the most central location in the state of Wyoming with any population.
Our sights along the way --
We never seem to get away from them. They are all along the freeway, just as they were along the one side of our campground in Utah and behind Walmart in Rawlins. |
This came into the Walmart lot and I told Gary to take pictures! The fellow just stopped for a pizza. |
The rider of this was accompanied by his trusty dog, who rode in the box with his head resting on the master's shoulder! |
Ah-h-h? Where do we go from here? |
Okay, one tunnel is open. |
To two-way traffic, no less! |
A common sight through Wyoming. |
Reading the history of our campground, I thought I would pass a little of that along. It is a 27,500 acre ranch purchased by a Thiel family in 1994. There are approximately 2500 head of bison roaming the ranch with a small herd of 40 where the guests can travel to the middle of the herd via the Terry Rail Express which is the ranch's very own rail road. The track was made from Burlington Northern railroad ties and is 2.4 miles long.
The train was built by Ron Thiel in 2004 using different scraps and pieces from old army trucks and other machinery that was laying around the ranch. The ranch was bought in 1885 by the first territorial governor of Wyoming. It was also the south headquarters of the Warren livestock company and was at least five times bigger than it is now. President Theodore Roosevelt often visited the ranch.
I always call the bison "bison"and Gary calls them "buffalo". Hm-m-m? Today on our Trolley Tour we were told that the difference is the number of ribs that they have. So there is a difference.
We also got pictures of these little cuties here on the ranch when we drove about the campground area.
I will do another Blog later today of our trip into Cheyenne for our Trolley Tour. So check back.
