Ready to Roll

Our History

My photo
Ohio, United States
Having recently retired we are fulfilling our long time dream. We began our camping life with a tent in 1969 adjusting as each of our three sons arrived over the years and gradually progressed to a 32' Class A in 2007. Even after our sons became too busy with their own interests, we continued dreaming over the years. The Louisville, KY 2003 Great North American RV Rally and the book "Movin' On" convinced us that a motorhome after retirement was really for us! In 2007 we sold our home and disposed of most of our belongings and awaited the wife's retirement on February 1, 2008. We were out in our first motorhome ten times in our first summer in 2007, with our grandson joining us eight of those ten times. Since he must stay behind with his mom and dad to continue school, we told him he can join us on vacations (by car or plane) anywhere we are as we travel the US. Imagine the history lessons he could acquire! However, Mom and Dad don't look at it that way, especially the flying. Fortunately we don't miss work one bit!! We just miss the friends there. We have many hobbies to keep us busy when we decide to sit still for a day. Hope to see you on the road.

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH - MORMON TEMPLE SQUARE

Thursday June 11th, Salt Lake City, Mormon Temple Square, very interesting and pretty.

Gary went to the LDS Research Library to get a start on genealogy research here.  Of course, his interest is for reasons much different than the LDS people.  They do it for purposes of the after-life of the ancestor. But sorry, our ancestors had to direct their own paths!!
Corner entrance to the Library

LDS History Museum, to open in 2015

Driving south to Salt Lake City I finally got a picture of the Deseret Mill and Pasta, owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints - isn't most everything in this area?
There are oil refineries in the area also.  Not sure who owns them!
Deseret Industries (LDS) owns many things, including the Thrift Stores.  We find their clothing too high priced for used, but I occasionally find Creative Memories items and I consider that a "find"!

On to the Square which appears to be four city squares as we know them ??  --
Difficult to get good angle pictures because of the trees in the walkways. But the grounds and walkways are beautiful, especially the roses.
This walkway is often crowded with people.

The Temple is only open to LDS members, and maybe only to certain levels of membership ??  I really do not know for sure.
There is a large domed building on the west side of the square that is used for music, including organ recitals.

There are many groups visiting as it is a bus tour stop.

The Assembly Hall used for meetings and music, unfortunate that the city sky scrapers are in the pictures also. We are hoping to see a Mormon Tabernacle Choir program sometime while here.
The Hall was built from the left over granite from the temple and was completed in 1880. It is used for meetings and the auditorium seats 2000 with 100 choir seats.  The truncated spires were originally chimneys

This Nauvoo Bell originally hung in the Temple built in Nauvoo, Illinois in the 1840's. The saints removed the bell in IL in 1846 when they were forced to leave because of persecution. It is now rung hourly to represent religious freedom and also on KSL stations in the area.
It represents the Relief Society that was founded in 1842 for the women of the church who raised money for this display.
There are several other statues illustrating the history of migration and also the background of their religious teachings.

Restoration of the Melchizadek Priesthood.

Domed building in the center of the square,
not sure what it is for.
Buildings opposite the Square, The first two are of the LDS Saints Conference Center. Note the gardens and trees on the roof!!

South side, opposite the Square.
Deseret News and LDS Business College

Union Pacific Station on the left
and KSL stations on the right.
View of the Capitol from outside the Temple Square,
with the zoom lens.  A trip for another day!

Take care and check back with us.  Gary is out today going through an air museum.
I stayed home to do what I needed, the Blog and especially defrosting the freezer.  It gets so bad since it is so small and opened so often for ice cubes.  Woe is me!!
