Our History

My photo
Ohio, United States
Having recently retired we are fulfilling our long time dream. We began our camping life with a tent in 1969 adjusting as each of our three sons arrived over the years and gradually progressed to a 32' Class A in 2007. Even after our sons became too busy with their own interests, we continued dreaming over the years. The Louisville, KY 2003 Great North American RV Rally and the book "Movin' On" convinced us that a motorhome after retirement was really for us! In 2007 we sold our home and disposed of most of our belongings and awaited the wife's retirement on February 1, 2008. We were out in our first motorhome ten times in our first summer in 2007, with our grandson joining us eight of those ten times. Since he must stay behind with his mom and dad to continue school, we told him he can join us on vacations (by car or plane) anywhere we are as we travel the US. Imagine the history lessons he could acquire! However, Mom and Dad don't look at it that way, especially the flying. Fortunately we don't miss work one bit!! We just miss the friends there. We have many hobbies to keep us busy when we decide to sit still for a day. Hope to see you on the road.

GILMORE CAR MUSEUM at HICKORY CORNERS, MI

We had a beautiful weather day for the Gilmore Car Museum, the largest auto museum in North America which started in the early 1960s.

It is 90 acres in a country setting and has at least 480 vehicles in seven independent museums in many buildings added one at a time. Some of the first vehicles in his collection included a 1927 Ford Model T, a 1913 Rolls-Royce and a 1920 Pierce-Arrow (which Gilmore restored. . This is the first that I learned the difference between the Model T and the Model A!!
They also offer several mile-long rides each in one of their vintage cars, for an additional cost of course.
Jay Leno was interviewed when he visited them. Gary had seen that on TV. So he knew what they housed!

Ford/Lincoln building beside the Cadillac building.

Replica of a Train Depot that housed many
vehicle emblems and hood ornaments.
Next to the Train Depot is a Train Switch Tower which served the Kalamazoo &  South Haven Railroad before it was moved in 1964 to this museum campus.

Gary gets picture of a joy ride.

Shell Station that was a recreated 1930s station featuring a
full service work bay and gas pumps that sold
gas for 18 cents a gallon.

Another joy ride that I caught while resting on a bench!

The grounds have several picnic table areas. They encourage day and weekend stays, or even a mini-vacation.
And another!

Gary kept suggesting that I get my convertible ride!
No, I want to own one!!

Last on our agenda was a stop at the 1941 Blue Moon Diner on the property. which had been moved from Meriden, Connecticut in 2004.  It was a good thing that they had many tables outside as well.  That is where we shared a table. Great pulled pork sandwich!

The Gilmore 's had a Racing Team from 1967 to 1987.

One of the barns housed toy pedal vehicles from the past as well as the Gnome-Mobile from the Disney's 1967 film. The Gnome-Mobile was a personal gift to Donald Gil;more by Disney himself.

And hundred's more!!
Stay tuned. Holland Michigan is next!!
