Ready to Roll

Our History

My photo
Ohio, United States
Having recently retired we are fulfilling our long time dream. We began our camping life with a tent in 1969 adjusting as each of our three sons arrived over the years and gradually progressed to a 32' Class A in 2007. Even after our sons became too busy with their own interests, we continued dreaming over the years. The Louisville, KY 2003 Great North American RV Rally and the book "Movin' On" convinced us that a motorhome after retirement was really for us! In 2007 we sold our home and disposed of most of our belongings and awaited the wife's retirement on February 1, 2008. We were out in our first motorhome ten times in our first summer in 2007, with our grandson joining us eight of those ten times. Since he must stay behind with his mom and dad to continue school, we told him he can join us on vacations (by car or plane) anywhere we are as we travel the US. Imagine the history lessons he could acquire! However, Mom and Dad don't look at it that way, especially the flying. Fortunately we don't miss work one bit!! We just miss the friends there. We have many hobbies to keep us busy when we decide to sit still for a day. Hope to see you on the road.

WEEK from CHAPPELL to SYDNEY, NEBRASKA

Our stop gap between Colorado and Mt Rushmore near Rapid City, S. Dakota!!  Not much here except, farms, railroads, graineries, Antique Shops, and trains every half hour along with rain.
View of the train as we see them, between the grainery
and the storage units.

As we cross the tracks when going to town.
Side track on the left and two track with another
side track on the right.
Everyone here says the rain is much, much needed.
Today we are staying at home because of the rain, Gary fixed a baseboard night light and I made hard cooked eggs, downloaded pictures and working on Blog. So this too shall pass!
In Sydney, about thirty miles down the road, the Antique shops and the Salvation Army Thrift Store have been our highlights.  We love this and ran across a few things that I have long been hunting for and got a couple Christmas presents which were badly needed. So now, to not trip over the boxes before we get to Ohio in August!!
Yesterday we also stopped in Walmart where I tripped on a mat just inside the door and landed on my nose!! Thank goodness not much in bruises!!  I would have expected them to take up the mat, but no! They did not even get rid of the raised rippled one. Evidently they do not realize it is a lawsuit waiting to happen. Thank goodness it will not be me!!
Just thought I'd share a few pictures, but there is not much else going on. Sydney is a little larger than our town of Chappell which boasts 973 population!
Cabela's store in Sydney.
Sydney was the home of the Cabela family which started the hunter's paradise shop. The family made great money from this business and two sons of the nine children took over the business after the father passed away a couple years ago. They have since made their billions when Bass Pro Shop bought them out for over 4 billion. The corporate offices have since closed putting more than a thousand people out of work there in Sidney. Economically it has hit that town hard!!  Even the Antique Shops were telling us how it has affected them as well. There is still an uncle in town who owns a small furniture store.
The mother still lives in the mansion which boasts seven bedrooms and 14 bathrooms. Guess they needed that space for nine children, but not sure at what point in life they built it.

We heard that it will be turned over to the town for a museum when she is gone.  Until then it boasts the Cabela elephant motif on the front door and has many of the heads of the father and two son's hunting trophies inside.
We have eaten out at Grandma Jo's for Sunday dinner in Sydney and then Toot's Bar in Chappell for lunch where the food is very good and great prices and is just across the RR tracks and another block away from the Park where we are parked.
Sydney and other crossroad towns between here and there have many other things that took our interest!
We think that they had a white paint sale! Many buildings
were painted so fresh!!

Thought Fenske's in Salem would appreciate this.

This was such sad shape for one of my favorite cars!
This little town had many little junk yards.

This motel looked like it was vary attractive in it's
heyday!

Lynn and Rich, I took these pictures for you to see.

What style of lamp is this???

I thought Rich could make this
 reindeer for Christmas.
It looks so simple! And so cute!!
Our Park boasts this sentiment for politicians.

No other news. but will pull out of here early Saturday morning. We are hoping that it will not be windy at that time of day!! The weather has not been the best for our travels. We have seen some catastrophe pictures on the news!! It's hard to call the shots when you don't know how the seasons hit all of these regions. We noticed that Denver has been hit heavy with the snow.  They had twelve inches of snow here the day before we arrived. So guess that it is good that it is melting quickly.
Talk with you again soon.
