Ready to Roll

Our History

My photo
Ohio, United States
Having recently retired we are fulfilling our long time dream. We began our camping life with a tent in 1969 adjusting as each of our three sons arrived over the years and gradually progressed to a 32' Class A in 2007. Even after our sons became too busy with their own interests, we continued dreaming over the years. The Louisville, KY 2003 Great North American RV Rally and the book "Movin' On" convinced us that a motorhome after retirement was really for us! In 2007 we sold our home and disposed of most of our belongings and awaited the wife's retirement on February 1, 2008. We were out in our first motorhome ten times in our first summer in 2007, with our grandson joining us eight of those ten times. Since he must stay behind with his mom and dad to continue school, we told him he can join us on vacations (by car or plane) anywhere we are as we travel the US. Imagine the history lessons he could acquire! However, Mom and Dad don't look at it that way, especially the flying. Fortunately we don't miss work one bit!! We just miss the friends there. We have many hobbies to keep us busy when we decide to sit still for a day. Hope to see you on the road.

ON TO SOUTH DAKOTA, and MET UP WITH FRIENDS

May 5th, Saturday, we arrived at our new location at Rushmore Shadows RV Park south of Rapid City, South Dakota.
Behind the office to our left is the beginning of
Log Cabins you can rent. The other side of the
park also has Lodges for rent.

We are next to last going down hill.
There was some wind on the drive north from Nebraska, but not as bad as we have experienced before. We were elated that the park had so many sites with concrete pads, and we got one within view of the highway. We set up without problems and blew the dust from everything! We have had so much dust from the time that we left Arizona in January. So we are hoping to be rid of it for a while.
On the drive north I took a few interesting pictures. One was a tractor junk yard. Richard, we thought you would enjoy the thought of going through this.
Richard, a tractor junk yard!
As we got closer to Rapid City, we saw this fellow heading in to town! The one in the pink car that is!!

Beginning to get into more beautiful mountains.

So many trains in this part of the country,
and I thought this cargo was interesting!

Home again, we got all set up and about ready to relax and Gary took a walk and I decided to defrost the freezer, a job long overdue!! As thick as the frost was, it really did not take long to have the job finished.
Sunday, we went down the road to a Calvary Baptist Church and got a phone call on the way from our friends here, Dave and Laura. So we made arrangements to call them when we finished at church to make plans where to meet for lunch. We met them at Texas Roadhouse and had a great visit for about two hours. Too late I remembered how loud they play their music, but they were not too bad for a Sunday. We ordered without regard for calories or for the things that Gary is not to eat (bloomin' onion for example). Guess, he'll have to have the Prilosec out!!
Dave and Laura who we first met in Mesa, AZ
the winter of 2010/11,

Esther, I had to get this picture! It was the holder
for the menus. I thought it was neat!
We are hoping that we might meet with Dave and Laura again before we leave the area, but not sure they will have time. Laura works full time for Mt Rushmore. And Dave is busy building them a new one floor house to downsize. We are all realizing that we may need to slow down one of these days and eliminate the steps. They previously had a three story house built near the top of a mountain with an awesome view. But having a great view does not eliminate the steps.
After we left Roadhouse, we drove down the road farther past our park and checked out Hills City. It seems everything here is geared to tourist traffic. It was a quaint little town. One of the places had tons of wood carvings.

Many of the businesses were on the hillsides. But we were looking for a post office and an interesting place to eat some other day. Not sure that we made up our mind for that though. It was a beautiful drive, as usual.
Monday was catch up on laundry as the past park did not have any facilities and we never saw any in the little town. We were too busy shopping the Thrift and Antiques Shops anyway!
Gary got the front of the motorhome washed and debugged also. He was relieved to have that job finished also.
Tuesday is supposed to be good weather, so will go to Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse Monument. Stay tuned.
