Our History

My photo
Ohio, United States
Having recently retired we are fulfilling our long time dream. We began our camping life with a tent in 1969 adjusting as each of our three sons arrived over the years and gradually progressed to a 32' Class A in 2007. Even after our sons became too busy with their own interests, we continued dreaming over the years. The Louisville, KY 2003 Great North American RV Rally and the book "Movin' On" convinced us that a motorhome after retirement was really for us! In 2007 we sold our home and disposed of most of our belongings and awaited the wife's retirement on February 1, 2008. We were out in our first motorhome ten times in our first summer in 2007, with our grandson joining us eight of those ten times. Since he must stay behind with his mom and dad to continue school, we told him he can join us on vacations (by car or plane) anywhere we are as we travel the US. Imagine the history lessons he could acquire! However, Mom and Dad don't look at it that way, especially the flying. Fortunately we don't miss work one bit!! We just miss the friends there. We have many hobbies to keep us busy when we decide to sit still for a day. Hope to see you on the road.

ZUHL MUSEUM in Las Cruces NM

Wednesday, April 11th - Our day began with Gary's appointment with a dermatologist. He thought to have a couple moles burned off, but the doctor decided it was more beneficial to send one of them away for analysis.
After he returned home, we got antsy and decided to go to mail a bad computer ink cartridge back to HP, and from there we went on to see a quilt show and this Zuhl, natural history, petrified wood, history of life museum.
We were told that Herb Zuhl, owner of this collection, has just recently bought another whole collection. But it is not here yet. Who are the Zuhl's is at the bottom of this Blog.
These first few pictures were outside the building.

This is awesome, but we've not yet begun!!

From this point on I will type the information from their signs to save space in the Blog. I am sure that you will enjoy all of the beauty!!
"Partly because of the young geologic age and partly because of the mode of preservation, Deschutes fossil logs, though entirely replaced by silica, look very much like logs that fell in forests yesterday."

Gary is picturing this "board room conference table" for SES,

Stinking Water Creek located in east central Oregon's Columbia River basalt flows were protected from burning by the swamps in which they grew.  Where fossil wood is famous for it's rich gold and brown colors.

Next is petrified wood from Arizona:

Nautiloids were squid-like Mollusks with chambered
straight or coiled shells.

In 1970, Herb and Joan Zuhl intrigued, saw a rancher removing a petrified log. They shipped it home and had it cut and polished. This began a new passion and business for the next 30 years. They sold specimens from their Manhattan gallery until retiring in 1991. Then they moved to Las Cruses NM and presented their immense collection to NMSU where it can be seen today. Hope you enjoyed the museum as much as we did!!
We are getting ready to move on Saturday and Gary's cousin kept prodding us to see this.  So-o-o glad that we took the time today.  It was not our only stop. The Quilt Show will be in the next Blog.
