Ready to Roll

Our History

My photo
Ohio, United States
Having recently retired we are fulfilling our long time dream. We began our camping life with a tent in 1969 adjusting as each of our three sons arrived over the years and gradually progressed to a 32' Class A in 2007. Even after our sons became too busy with their own interests, we continued dreaming over the years. The Louisville, KY 2003 Great North American RV Rally and the book "Movin' On" convinced us that a motorhome after retirement was really for us! In 2007 we sold our home and disposed of most of our belongings and awaited the wife's retirement on February 1, 2008. We were out in our first motorhome ten times in our first summer in 2007, with our grandson joining us eight of those ten times. Since he must stay behind with his mom and dad to continue school, we told him he can join us on vacations (by car or plane) anywhere we are as we travel the US. Imagine the history lessons he could acquire! However, Mom and Dad don't look at it that way, especially the flying. Fortunately we don't miss work one bit!! We just miss the friends there. We have many hobbies to keep us busy when we decide to sit still for a day. Hope to see you on the road.

CARLSBAD, NEW MEXICO

APRIL 2nd, Monday, got up early, took a packed lunch and drove to Carlsbad NM by way of I-10 through corner of Texas.

Once it was daylight the scenery was awesome!!

Our objective was to go through Carlsbad Caverns. Gary had even paid in advance. However, when we got there we found that their elevator to go down to the caverns was out of order. There were many younger who went down, but they did say that several had to be carried out the previous day. Not for us!
What a disappointment!!
But I can share what we did see on the movie and pictures in the lobby:
The beginning of the descent and no rails!

The three tours are each an hour to hour and quarter. The natural entrance descends over 750 feet into the earth following steep and narrow trails.
Another Route, The Big Room, is 8.2 acres. This is where the elevator takes you.
The Kings Tour takes you 830 feet below the desert with a climb later up an eight story-high hill. Now you see our hesitation!!  Enjoy their pictures!!

They warn that one touch by a hand or arm can harm the
walls forever!

We did walk down to the mouth of the cave for exercise!!
This is the CCC complex in the background.

Leaving the park, Gary had to stop and take a look at the map as we needed gas. So I took pictures of the Whites City historic area.

Going on north into Carlsbad for gas, happened upon a Wendy's. So had to have our frosty. Wendy's is difficult to find in Las Cruces. We've found only one and not near us.
Now headed back the way we had come, we did enjoy scenery.

Not white sands, but impressive anyway!

Not sure what we will be doing next, if anything before heading north in NM.
We did go back to La Posta in Mesilla Historic District on the Sunday before Easter so will share those pictures also.
View from our table.
Gary sent this out by text right away.
He said it was him!!

This was the dinner that we had tons of leftovers from.

Have a great day and hope that you are having enjoyable weather!!  Our neighbor was only here overnight. They are headed for Ohio. We are not ready to do that yet!!  We are hoping to do sight seeing way north of Ohio before returning.
