We have spent almost a month settling in here in Mesa Arizona and it is time to do some sight seeing!! We have neglected it long enough.
We ventured out on a Saturday morning for the weekly breakfast at a neighboring, sister resort to Mesa Regal to meet up with friends from our workamping months at Mt.Hood RV Resort in Oregon, Bob and Jacque. Like us they were glad to leave the rain of Oregon behind.
After breakfast we took time to sit and visit in Good Life Resort's lobby. This was followed by a tour of the park grounds with Jacque driving us while Bob did his weekly duty of taking down tables after the breakfast. It was a wonderful visit and great breakfast that we will surely repeat while here in Mesa. Tasty and very reasonable!! We have taken other friends with us since then.
One of our shows here in Mesa Regal was Jimmy Curry, as John Denver, and his wife. It was a very enjoyable show!! Mesa Regal always has a great venue of shows for the season.
One evening the sky was awesome!! So nice to enjoy the shirt sleeve weather!!
Even shorts and sandals weather!! It is so much fun to sit outside to play games and visit with our friends, Bill and Jane, from our home church back in Ohio. They are our neighbors here and we find time to do some sight seeing as well as fun and games with them. Jane obliged when I asked her to show her sandal clad foot for the camera!! Not that we are rubbing it in that we enjoy such nice weather!! It does get very cool in the evening and early morning, most would say it is cold. But I hesitate to call it so, as it is a far cry from the snow and ice!!
This past Monday we took Bill and Jane and went to Tucson to do some sightseeing.
It is always nice to enjoy the many views of the mountains while driving.
Our first stop was the roadside pull off to enjoy the view.
After that we went to Mission San Xavier, a National Historic Landmark, founded as a Catholic mission in 1692.
As you can see, the construction of this current church was never fully completed, because they ran short on funds. This construction began in 1783 when southern Arizona was a part of New Spain. It is the oldest European structure that is still intact in Arizona. In 1821 it became a part of Mexico following their independence. Then in 1854 the mission joined the U. S. through the Gadsden Purchase. The exterior preservation work began in 1989. The interior has many original statuary and mural paintings. There are still religious services being held here.
From the Mission we went on to Old Tucson where the movie settings remain for an occasional shooting as well as for the public to reminisce while strolling through the grounds.
From movie, The Alamo
Gary started to climb up on this wagon, then thought better of it. It no longer looked too sturdy.
Headed for the Gold Mine!!
And what would the Old West be without the Jails, and the Saloons
with the singers and
skits and
the can-can dancers?
They even had a crazy shoot-out skit (that we could have done without!).
The guys checked out the locomotive.
We took a tour train ride over the grounds and could have taken the stage coach, but refrained.
We really spent more time here than we should have. Because of that, we did not leave ourselves enough time for any more sights of Tucson. We had just enough time for a good ice cream cone and the drive back to Mesa before dark. It was a good day, but tiring. Tomorrow we are going back out east of Mesa on Route 60 where we saw some awesome rocky mountains when coming west at the end of December. We did not take the time for picture taking on that trip, so will do so now.
Hope all is well with you all this winter. Stay warm and check back in with us soon.
