Ready to Roll

Our History

My photo
Ohio, United States
Having recently retired we are fulfilling our long time dream. We began our camping life with a tent in 1969 adjusting as each of our three sons arrived over the years and gradually progressed to a 32' Class A in 2007. Even after our sons became too busy with their own interests, we continued dreaming over the years. The Louisville, KY 2003 Great North American RV Rally and the book "Movin' On" convinced us that a motorhome after retirement was really for us! In 2007 we sold our home and disposed of most of our belongings and awaited the wife's retirement on February 1, 2008. We were out in our first motorhome ten times in our first summer in 2007, with our grandson joining us eight of those ten times. Since he must stay behind with his mom and dad to continue school, we told him he can join us on vacations (by car or plane) anywhere we are as we travel the US. Imagine the history lessons he could acquire! However, Mom and Dad don't look at it that way, especially the flying. Fortunately we don't miss work one bit!! We just miss the friends there. We have many hobbies to keep us busy when we decide to sit still for a day. Hope to see you on the road.

WINDING DOWN IN SANDY OREGON AREA

On a trip through Troutdale OR which lies along the Columbia River not far from Interstate 5, we stopped for lunch in their restored tourist area. Lunch was great, but the restored historical/whimsical shop that the cafe' was located in, was even greater. We enjoyed the whimsical items for decorating! Not for the motor home though! We have since finished up with our jobs here at Mt. Hood RV Village Resort and enjoyed a few hours on the park patio eating and visiting for the last time with some who moved on right away. Our boss, Dan, treated is to grilled chicken and steak, which he cooked for us. Thanks Dan for a good summer! Dan and the office bookkeeper also treated us to cakes for the event. The chocolate one that I did not get a picture of, was one to die for!! They sure did not need the chocolate dessert that I made!! I guess that is why we had so much left to take back home. Neighbors and co-workers enjoyed the time of leisure while Dan gave us some summary data for the summer.
Leann worked nights to keep the indoor pool in tip-top shape and to check in very late arrivals for the park. She had to meet them at the gate after their phone call. Us girls in the office checked in all who arrived before 9 pm and I am sure that Leann was grateful when they were all in. . . Bob and Jacque were our neighbors and travel full time. They did not have the best summer do to hurdles with Bob's health, and health problems for their dog also. They had family in the area, but are not planning to come back for any extended stay in the future. Just too much humidity here. We sure can agree!!
Marcos here worked maintenance and Lynn on the right manages the store and worked daytime with the till that I used on my two evenings. I believe that is her husband in the background.
Jan and Pete on the right here travel full time and usually winter in AZ. They were glad to be in this area as they also have family just across the river.
And this is a couple that do the lawn work in the park with Cindy to the right. Cindy is the boss, Dan's wife. Now my apologies to all of the co-workers who we missed getting pictures of.
And last but certainly not least - - is Jean my partner for the season. She and Brenda were patient with this old lady learning a strange computer program. I did finally get comfortable with it by time we finished up. I hope that I get to use the same program soon so that I do not loose what I've learned. And I promise Jean, if we come back I will remember to raise the gate for the new arrivals!! Jean was a very expressive person and fun to work with. It was great to get to know her.
Last Saturday was Oktoberfest in Sandy, so we checked it out. Gary was happy to see the Classics on display . . .
especially the Rat Rods!!
An the Brats made it all worthwhile!!
In addition to the usual vendors, they also had some artists set up in the church. Anna Mae Lindsay from Sandy OR, did some beautiful work and we enjoyed visiting with her. She does my kind of paintings, scenery and flowers. They were awesome!!!
Sunday after church Tim and Judy invited us out for blackberry cobbler late in the afternoon. They knew that time was growing short for us now and it had to be now or never!
They live on a five acres location in the fine wooded land of Oregon in a beautiful dome house that they built. It was lovely and I always wondered how the inside of a dome would be designed. So it was wonderful to see!! You could see the outer dome shape, though the rest of the interior was the usual structure and design. The windows in the top of the dome made it very energy efficient and comfortable.
But to top that off, we got to see Tim's great woodworking talent!! These one of a kind chairs were comfortable and made from the trunks of trees that they felled on their own property!! He also had various styles of Cribbage Game boards that he has made and has an interesting rock collection also.
To top the visit off, we got to sample Judy's cooking talents. Thank you for the delicious black berry cobbler, Judy!! I'm glad that Tim picked them so that you could bake for us.
It was also wonderful to meet two of your sons and finding that you and the boys had a lot in common with our family!! Very similar life stories.
We just love finding wonderful people with lives that we feel very akin to. This is why we visit community churches rather than the church in the parks. We can feel a part of each community!!
This week Gary is another year older!! But then I can't hold that over him, as my mile marker was last month!! So I took him out for a long awaited steak dinner at Roadhouse. We have passed Roadhouse many times while in Oregon, but had never stopped. But then we have not been eating much beef since February. So time for a treat!!
It was time for a final farewell to our Sandy Baptist Church friends this past Sunday. It has been wonderful!! Pastor Fred and wife, Mary, were great. And we also had some very good Sunday School class teachers. It made me begin keeping a more organized notebook of high points from the lessons. We hope to keep in touch with several of our new friends from SBC.
Take care and God Bless.
