Ready to Roll

Our History

My photo
Ohio, United States
Having recently retired we are fulfilling our long time dream. We began our camping life with a tent in 1969 adjusting as each of our three sons arrived over the years and gradually progressed to a 32' Class A in 2007. Even after our sons became too busy with their own interests, we continued dreaming over the years. The Louisville, KY 2003 Great North American RV Rally and the book "Movin' On" convinced us that a motorhome after retirement was really for us! In 2007 we sold our home and disposed of most of our belongings and awaited the wife's retirement on February 1, 2008. We were out in our first motorhome ten times in our first summer in 2007, with our grandson joining us eight of those ten times. Since he must stay behind with his mom and dad to continue school, we told him he can join us on vacations (by car or plane) anywhere we are as we travel the US. Imagine the history lessons he could acquire! However, Mom and Dad don't look at it that way, especially the flying. Fortunately we don't miss work one bit!! We just miss the friends there. We have many hobbies to keep us busy when we decide to sit still for a day. Hope to see you on the road.

Arrived ALAMOGORDO, NEW MEXICO

As you can see from our shadow as we headed west leaving Texas, it was early!! We left about 6:30 and anxious to get to our destination.
These are some of the things that we saw along the highway. Couldn't imagine what they were until we got closer. Just loaded trucks!!
I began watching the progress across the plains knowing that mountains were ahead of us. Note the mountain. I wondered how many miles ahead of us it might be. So I kept taking pictures of it as we progressed.
By time it was directly off to my right we had traveled at least fifty miles and our roads began to roll into the foot hills. Before we knew it, we were headed south and went through Roswell NM which is know for the alien sitings. However, the locals will tell that it did not actually happen at Roswell. Who knows?? Or did it even happen??
Enjoy the sites that we had as we traveled! We begin to see some adobe construction, although it is not all adobe.
More prairie with homes few and far between!!
And then the hills begin.
And then the timber lined mountains begin.
And we know that we are getting into Indian territory when we begin passing Casinos and Hotels. We will go back to one of these to see the lake behind it also. It is beautiful country!!
And more adobe.
As we are nearing Alamogordo NM, we can see the white sands in front of us, between us and the next mountains. Alamogordo is in a large valley even though it is about 4200 ft. elevation. This picture is the mountains west of Alamogordo.
We arrived before one o'clock at Boot Hill RV Park and were thankful to have plenty of time to get hooked up and unpacked before calling Gary's cousin to let her know that we were in town. We had so much packed rather than in it's proper place because of moving things from our stay with our sons in Youngstown. Richie, notice that we found a place for Mr.Frog! We will not be putting our awning out here as it is too windy to be sitting out any. And I think that we will be on the go too much. It is also dark by 5:30 here!!
They have two of these little cabins on the grounds for rent and are planning on putting in some more as they are in demand.
We also went out behind the barn to see the horse corralled there.
I am fascinated with the mountains and notice that they are not all timber covered. These are to the east of the RV Park.
Going in to town later for dinner with Gary's cousin Mildred and her husband Zollie, we did some picture taking of trees around, as there were not many. Notice the palm which is definitely not a native of the area!! Mildred says that they have not appeared here until very recent years as people have begun to vary the landscaping.
This is the Italian Cypress.
But I forget what she said this evergreen is. It is not a tall variety. You can see the five o'clock shadow on the mountains!!
Mildred and Zollie welcomed us with dinner and to meet other friends of theirs who were visiting from Ft. Collins CO.
Claude and Mary were interesting and fun also!! They are relative newly weds compared to the rest of us. Mary especially was interested in our nomad life style. It was a wonderful visit!!
They all four came to visit us at Boot Hill the next day to take a look at the motor home.
We understand there is much to see, so stay with us and I will keep posting as we go along.
